I'm wondering if a server style computer would be a good choice for EMC2?
I can get one of these HP ProLiant ML110 G5 Storage Servers for about $65.

I am planing a retrofit for an Mori Seiki MVJR servo driven CNC Mill.

Thanks for any thoughts

the only way to tell is to run the Latency test. I have a computer with a Pentium 4 that gives me high latency, yet my other much older computer gives me 10k-15k latency.

OK, I guess it is worth a try to test it, if it works, that saves buying all the other parts such as power supply, hard drive, memory and chassis.

Hard to say, in general. I have an old (twin first generation Xeon) rackmount 1U server running my CNC lathe, and it is fine. However, a server is more likely to do clever system maintainance stuff. Mine needs SMI turning off (there is a patch) or it throws in a 100,000nS latency every 64 seconds.
