computer recomendation? was created by Todd Zuercher
I need something for a stepper machine that has more than one pci slot.
I was looking at D525 motherboards but they only seem to have 1 slot.

What do you intend putting in the slots? You can get 1500+ IO lines into a single PCI card (Mesa 4-plug card filled with sserial devices).
Onboard video works nicely with those cards, so a single slot _might_ be enough.
It is supposedy possible to get a dual-PCI riser for the Intel boards.

I would want a guarantee before buying though.

might help?

I don't need much. Just one 5i25 card would be more than sufficient. But, two $20 parallel port cards would be good enough. My problem lies in how the machine I intend to retrofit is set up now. It has 4 axis with separate high and low limits for each. It uses 2 parallel ports (2 axis/port) but uses an odd pin out that is requiring me to use x-mode to get the right input pins for the limits. Pin#1,14,16, and 17 are used for the limits. That or make some custom cables with the wires crossed. X-mode usually doesn’t work on most motherboards built in ports that I have tried, so hence the 2 cards. I have tested it some with a single parallel port card running X-mode and a hacked together cable to y to both ports on the drive. It worked fine for testing but I wanted something better for the shop environment and since we have 5 of these machines, I would like to keep the hardware simple and off the shelf (the fewer adapters and home made gadgets the better).

I have seen several recommendations to use the Intel Atom D525. I did some looking
Foxconn makes a couple different models. R50-D4 one appears to be common and cheap.
It is also the only one I could find with a built in parallel port.
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856119041
However I have seen a few complaints about power supplies dying or burning up.
Another brand is Zotac such as this one.
www.amazon.com/ZOTAC-ZBOXSD-ID12-U-Dual-...id=1329341276&sr=1-7
Does not have a parallel port.
Long ago I thought people liked the Shuttle. I found this.

but it does not appear to even have an expansion port.
Should I gamble on the Foxconn?

I'd bet my money on the BOX525MO from Intel, I only bet when I know I'll win. I have one of those and a buddy has a Foxconn and his died... I have one Zotac a GeForce 6100-Value motherboard and it works as well as the BOX525MO and has 2 PCI slots and one PCI express slot and is currently running my Hardine CHNC lathe.

would you settle for a BOXD525MW? I don't see the MO listed anymore.

I managed to find a BOXD510MO and a BOXD525MW.
I chalk it up to confusion. The 510 is an older version with a slower processor and is more expensive.
Most likely I will order the 525!
thanks
