I guess this computer is pretty rubbish?
It's a DELL Dimension 1100 DELL Dimension 1100
Should I junk it? I have another better / newer PC I can try to use instead.
I just hoped I could get away with it, as it's not a terrible old PC, I just wanted to give it one last chance!
Cheers, Scott.

What have you tried so far to improve it?
Did you turn off any and all power saving stuff in the bios?
Disable hyperthreading?
What live CD did you try? If you only tried the CD with Ubuntu 10.4, try the older 8.4 version. It often works better on older single core processors.
