I recently got a $20 FLIRC brand USB IR remote doovey to use with a PC based media center. It emulated a keyboard, and can be programmed to learn 'commands' from any IR remote control, (your old one from a television, DVD etc). It works a treat, and it quite easy to program using a little downloadable program.
Anyway, it occurs to me that it could be used with a Linuxcnc machine if you wanted to 'drive' it with a TV remote. On second thoughts, , , probably a bad idea that would end in tears.

Hi
It is a very neat little device.
If you have tried getting lirc to configure the remote from a Hauppage DVB tuner for instance, you can appreciate the simplicity of converting to keystrokes and controlling the GUI.
I may get one of these for controlling my computer beneath the TV.
Will be easier to match pause/play/ffwd commands for mplayer to the TV remote buttons than have a wireless keyboard to hand all the time.
Only downside in 'rip-off Britain' it is £22 ie 50% more than in the States
For controlling a machine - probably not a good idea - any more than any of the other interference prone wireless interfaces.
regards
