Matrox 730-00 Millennium?

Did buy the wrong card?

Looked through the Matrox site but can't find a driver and uncertain how to install for Debian/Wheezy.

Any pointers?

I have not used this specific card before but have had no problems with other ones from matrox.

Make sure you have firmware-linux-nonfree and xserver-xorg-video-mga installed.

Then install the card and ensure your BIOS is using it and not the internal chip if you have one.

Re-boot and see what happens, it should detect the card and use the mga driver.

Thanks for that. I ran the commands and the result was that the latest were already installed. The Matrox 730 was purchased used. I now see that the rig will not even boot if the card is in place. Likely a hardware problem.
