Dell S2240T Touch Screen was created by eman5oh
Hello, I purchased a Dell S2240T touch screen monitor to use on a Boss 5 Retrofit. I am running Linux CNC installed from the disk image from this site. I have read other have got this model to work with recent ubuntu distros, can anyone help me get it running and not break Linux CNC in the process? The monitor displays fine, just the touch part does not work.

pretty much what ever they did to make it work wiht Ubuntu you will have to also do.
The problem may be that now we are using Debian and the packages needed (if there was) my not be available.
Is it a USB connected? Does it not work at all?
Google is your friend on this one I think

From what I understand is that it just works in the newest versions of ubuntu but not older ones so I am not sure where to go with this one. Some one asked how to make it work with an older version of ubuntu and it went un answered.

Linuxcnc 2.7.4?
I suspect linuxcnc might be a bit old. Some quotes,
"I think the usual solution has to do with recognizing the touchscreen as a Wacom device. I don't have any hands-on experience with touchscreen support, however. Unless someone more knowledgeable comes along, I'd suggest Google searching for wacom device support in Ubuntu. "
So run "xinput list" and see if anything comes back. If not, after that dmesg |less and scroll through looking at the USB stuff that is detected. So if anything looks hopeful.
If neither of these shows anything you might well be wasting your time.
If you can see something paste it here and what PC is it connected to? if its a Dell and you do get an output I might root around and see if I can find something similar as we use Dell kit here at work.

googling Dell S2240T touch screen Debian Wheezy, brought up a couple of hits. Someone out there made it work on a raspberrypie.
github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/113
Don't know if you'll be able to make their drivers work, but worth a look.

I will try getting it working via xinput. If that fails I was wondering how hard is to install linux cnc and a realtime kernel on the latest Ubuntu LTS?

From what I can briefly read Debian 7.9 is as new as you can go (so not debian 8) so it doesnt appear you can use Ubuntu 14.x LTS but 12 32bit, yes its described here, linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/getting-start...etting-linuxcnc.html. My suggestion is if you are going to do you own install stick with Debian the differences are minor but might bite you and if you are "bleeding edge" ie no one else has done it may find yourself on your own. If you dont know what #freenode is go take a look at there are channels like #debian and #ubuntu with ppl on line to try and help most hours of the day and since touchscreens come on many laptops they probably have seen issues before. I have got a Dell p2314t here but I am snowed under for about 2 weeks and my boss would throw a hissy fit if I slapped some more "strange hardware" on my desk right now, LOL. having a touchscreen however looks a great idea so its something I will look at for myself. Please let me know how you are doing with it and I'll try to help if I can to get this sussed. I often hang out on #debian and #ubuntu as well.
