Just built a setup with a Dell 780 and a dell P2314T xinput --list does not list the screen like RHEL7 does :(

Fault finding seems to suggest that the problem is with the kernel and we cant change the kernel?

Off to try Debian 7.9 i386 install method.

I have played with linuxcnc and Debian 7.9 and neither detect a touchscreen. RHEL7 and debian 8.3 livecd works no problem on boot. So my conclusion is you have to wait for linuxcnc to move to a newer kernel but probably for linuxcnc to move to Debian 8.3 or newer.

You might be able to install a separate driver. On a previous installation (a long time ago) I needed to install egalaxtouch.

I am not saying that these are the right drivers for your screen, but it sounds like you don't have much to lose from trying:

Possibly but given what the OS and software is controlling ie a spindle at 20,000rpm I am not going to start messing with it too much, I think I have reached my safety limit.

I would not anticipate any problems with the realtime control to be caused by installing a touchscreen driver. It will either work with your screen or it won't.

I can confirm that I have a machine running the egalxtouch driver and it has been running for several years with no problems.
