I am confused,
did you try apt-get install gedit AFTER removing the comments in sources.list and running apt-get update?

If you got errors then, cut and paste them and attach.

Yup, I did all that, got frustrated and reinstalled the OS.

1. checked that etc/apt/sources.list was not commented out

2. sudo apt-get update

3. sudo apt-get install gedit-common gedit gedit-plugins

process ran exited with no errors or warnings and I now have gedit installed and working.

Now all I have to do is update linuxcnc with the master,

What I did last time is use the LinuxCNC buildbot instructions buildbot.linuxcnc.org
I think that that is where all my troubles started. I maybe put something where it was not supposed to go.????

short version
get a key
get the master stanza into etc/apt/sources.list.d/linuxcnc-buildot.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linuxcnc

any glaring errors to this. Maybe I put stuff in the wrong place. When I did it I uncommented the entry for the master list and commented the other entries.(good or bad)?

Have not done that yet. As i said I did something stuped.

I updated linuxcnc and everything worked as advertised. I believe all my problems were from me putting stuff in the wrong place.

I do appreciate the time and effort. I should have done this to start with and regret the inconvenience. However I am more knowledgeable
about all this so that is a big plus for me. Thanks again for all the guidance and assistance.
