Good news, I figured out a way to solve the problem.

The following command will temporarily get rid of the unwanted display named "LVDS1".
xrandr --output LVDS1 --off

If that line is added to the following file:
(insert it before the last line)

/etc/mdm/SuperInit

Now the problem seems to be fixed permanently.

Andy Pugh thanks for you help, without it, I would have retreated back to my old drive and would have abandoned my further goals.

Now to take another swing at the tool changer.
