Greetings,
My machine is running LinuxCNC 2.5.4 with Ubuntu 10.01.

Oops I have to take it back, looks like Tormach had to install a driver for the Edimax so Ubuntu 10.04 will not support it
"out of the box"
Might be better to either use Ethernet, update the OS or add the driver (the Edimax uses a RTL8192CU)

Greetings,
What a challenge.
I did find a web page that listed the various USB adapters and their chipsets with compatibility. I just made an offer on an SMC device.
I cannot upgrade my machine for reasons that involve a long explanation.
I can, however, connect a 50 foot Ethernet cable and go that route for emergent access. This method works fine as the OS recognizes my internal Ethernet port.
Cheers,
Dave

Another option is to use a WIFI router as a Ethernet connected access point

Great suggestion.
Sadly, you would have to see my shop and realize I would not have any room to set it up. I am also running out of electricity. I have to unplug one machine to free up a socket to plug the CNC into.
Ahhh, to be organized. Regrettably, not today.
If/when I do find a working USB stick, I will post my results.
Cheers,
Dave

I've had a tough time finding a usb wifi module that doesn't use an RTL 8xxx chipset. However the Edimax EW 7811UN N150 works great if you install the correct driver which I found to be non trivial without the assistance of this guide:
sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/reserve-7
One thing to note, in my experience if you simply plug in the edimax and it seems to connect and function, look at the blue led. If it's on steady that's a tell tale sign the wrong driver is installed which will cripple the speed and cause hangups. Once the correct driver is installed all mine have blinked rapidly. I've used a half dozen of them on Wheezy and 2 on Mint with good results.
To achieve max range it seems to like to be installed into a powered hub, a short extension cable or in a usb port that doesn't have too many other items connected to the same internal hub.

I'm using a D-Link DWL-G122. Was first supported in a 2008 Linux Kernel (2.6.24), Mine is Rev B1. You'd probably have to shop eBay to find one.
