64 Bit Chip Compatibility?

First of all, my apologies if this is in the wrong place. New to Linux and a LinuxCNC virgin. I'm looking to put together a dual boot general purpose workstation (W10 and LinuxCNC). I've run across references to LinuxCNC not working and playing well on 64-bit processors. Does this mean that my workstation must utilize a 32-bit chip?

Thank you for any help you may be able to give.

There's no reason you cannot run 32 bit LinuxCNC on a 64 bit processor.
In fact most PCs less than about 10 years old are 64 bit capable

Also LinuxCNC runs fine on 64 bit systems, _but_ the default real time kernel (RTAI)
does not, so if you want to run a 64 bit version of LinuxCNC, you must use Preempt-RT
Instead of RTAI

Thank you SO much for the reply.

I'll drop over to the original Debian site and pick up the i386 64 edition if I decide that I must run 64 bits.

Any problem running the 32 bit?

Thanks, again!

No problems with 32 bit on LinuxCNC, its normally not a big memory space user

Hello.

I am one more new guy with similar situation.
I apologize for my misunderstanding, but situation is not 100% clear to me. I would be grateful for answer.

I have old computer with 64-bit processor (INTEL E2200). With this machine I want to learn to use LinuxCNC.
There is no need to me to install 64-bit OS. Does it mean that if I install 32-bit OS, I will be able to use RTAI?
Or system still will be able to handle well only Preempt-RT?

Thank you one more time.

32 bit LinuxCNC works fine on 64 bit processors so you can run the standard Wheezy +RTAI linuxCNC version on your CPU

If you want to run a 64 bit version of LinuxCNC you must use Preempt-RT
(unless you want a lot of pain and suffering buildingt/testing RTAI 64 bit)
Note that Preempt-RT will typically have worse latency than RTAI so is not a good choice for
parallel port systems ( there are exceptions but as a general rule RTAI has better latency on most hardware)

Try this one it worked like a charm on my 64bit system only problem was needed disable all cpu cores leave only one for best base jitter
linuxcnc-stretch-uspace-amd64-r10.iso working good on newest system and had my nvidia driver working out of box to
