HP Compaq Elite 8300 vs Dell Optiplex 7010 was created by my1987toyota
So I have been weighing my options for control computers.
Using some information from Wikipedia ( probably a bad idea )
it looks like the HP Compaq Elite 8300 and the Dell Optiplex 7010
use the same basic chip set the Intel Q77. So this begs the question
will they both yield basically the same performance? If so then if one
is more available then the other you wont miss much if you use either.
at least that would be my theory.
I currently don't have either to compare .so the question I guess to the
Linuxcnc veterans is " Has anyone tested both "? If so was their a clear winner
for durability, stability, lower jitter numbers. ect.

IIRC, the Dell 7010 should be a generation or two older than HP8300, not important...
Important:
I do have 2 of the HP 8300 and they are very nice, one is driving a machine for the last 3 weeks, the other is my daily driver in the shop for nearly 5 months and most of the tests on the machines are done on it. Get one with a 4 core cpu and 8GB and you are good.
Never had a 7010 although i can find plenty of them, but i did have a 9020 or similar and that was a beast, well it still is driving a wood router daily.
Edit:
Again IIRC 7010 does not have USB 3 ports.

the 7010's I have seen on ebay show the usb symbol and some with the ss next to the symbol but I haven't seen them
with the tell tale blue usb socket either . I am just not sure if the usb ss was a precursor to gen 3 or early gen 3 usb.
I am not historically very savy when it comes to that stuff hence the aforementioned Wikipedia search.

I just checked out a few different web site's . If the usb port has the USB symbol preceded by an SS ( Super Speed )
then it is USB 3.0. I guess some manufacturers decided they didn't want to bother with the blue color
for the inside of the socket.

Well as luck would have it were I work has a spare SFF Dell OptiPlex 7010.
it has the intel core i7 3.4 ghz and 4 gigs of ram
I already have a Samsung 860 EVO SSD ready for install and
since This will be a CNC control only it will have Debian Buster 10.6.0 for the O.S.
I cant wait to try the test script to see were it falls. If all goes well it will
either end up being my Lathe control or replacing the computer to control
the PnP.

well this is embarrassing. It looks like the Dell OptiPlex 7010 has a few programs on it that the boss needs to keep.
Unfortunately I cant just give him the hard drive ( stupid Windows 10 ) so plan B I have another 7010 coming it has
the core i5-3570 instead ( a little faster then the standard 3470. It also has 8 gigs of ram
( hopefully 2 4gig sticks so I can test the difference )
. Oh well it's always something. The plan B computer will be in next week. Figure test results about a week after.

OT: on:
Do you drive the Toyota in your avatar in the pictured environments? [If: my envy guaranteed. No way in my country]
OT: off.
If you can, get a SSD, good and fast USB stick, install LCNC on it (you will love to have that, always, at least I do!), attach it to thePC in question. Fire it up, go to bios, disable everything suspicious, boot into LCNC and do some thorough testing. You might need to pay the owner a beer. If it fails, undo your settings and have the owner sip the beer, go home and look fo another PC. If it is successful, I'd pay some more beers to bring the price down :-]
