You probably won't see step pulses with the LED, they are quite short.
I have LEDs on my step pins, but can rarely see anything with the lights on.
I would suggest that for the time being you assume that they are working, it would be very odd for direction pins to work and steps not to.

Hey guys thanks for all your help!!!
I think the ports are working properly now. I imported an older config file from my old cnc-dektop and now I can see in the .hal configuration in "axis" that the step lights sometimes blink.
I think the problem was that the speed was too low to show up in the .hal checktool.
The problem was that I couldn't test the card on my real machine because the controllers were burnt (has nothing to do with new parallport). I'm gonna do this today, hopefully it will work
The optos are high-speed types. They are ok.
Andypugh: You are right, the pulses are too short to be seen with an LED. That was my guess too (later).
Sorry guys for my silly problems and thank you all
PS: The latency is better with my laptop than it was before with my desktop! The machine is rworking faster than before (unbelievable!!).
