i'd like to change pc that controls machine. what manufacturers are better for all parts of the pc:
1. cpu - intel or amd?
2. graphics nvidia or ati?
3. MB?
4. sata or ide?
5. are modern laptops really that bad (but very convenient)?

yep, I saw that article. i thought someone has generalized experience about hardware that is being sold (made) now, not 2-3 years ago. especially about notebooks. I have no possibility to test a wide range of hardware.

the D510MO board from Intel is popular. The parallel port is on a ribbon-cable header which might be a slight disadvantage (though it is a slight advantage if you are using a Mesa 7i43).
Cost is about $75 for the board+CPU. You need memory and a HD (8GB SSD works well for EMC2). For the Power supply a PicoPSU running of the CNC system 12V makes sense. You then end up with a very compact system you can fit in the corner of the machine cabinet.

LiveCD install of 10,04 gives latency of 7000 with no fiddling.
