Prefered hardware for LCNC was created by Temo
Hello
So I want to set up LCNC for running a Onefinity router but have several options for hardware:
RPi 4, with 4 GB mem
Older Thinkpad W510 laptop running WIN 7
Older stationary tower pc running WIN 7, self build more than 10 years old
Newer small form factor pc running WIN 10, self build 3 years old
Newer Thinkpad P50 running win 10
With all options I was thinking of running Mesa 7i76e or 7c80/81
I would prefer the RPi 4 if it’s now been proven a stable build, 32 or 64 version
What is the current recommendationsÂ

Besides laptops, all of those have a good chance of running LinuxCNC, so download the official ISO, burn it to a USB stick, boot those PC's from it.
Choose live mode, everything will work as normal but it will not touch the existing stuff on the hard drive.

Thank you
If I understand you correct, this means running LinuxCNC from a usb-stick or an external usb hard drive. Will it be as responsive as running it from an internal hard drive, installed in a regular manner?

Depends on the speed of USB, USB stick or hard drive, but it is very usable.
USB3 with a USB SSD will be pretty much the same.

So i've decided to try out the RPi4 path, but I'm relative new to Linux and new to LinuxCNC.
I will run an Onefinity Machinist version router with dual y-axis motors with a Sorotec router that have a 0-10V interface for speed control, one tool setter, one touch probe, one wireless pendant and a Gecko G540 4 in 1 stepper driver: www.onefinitycnc.com/product-page/onefinity-machinist-original

www.sorotec.de/shop/Tool-Length-Sensor-Sorotec-Small-8mm.html
www.geckodrive.com/products/g540-4-axis-digital-stepper-drive
I've looked at two breakout boards for the RPi 4, the Mesa 7c81 and the 7i76e. I see there are a huge difference in price, where the 7c81 is 90$ and the 7i76e is 200$. The 7c81 also have a much smaller form factor as it integrate with the RPi4.
So my question as a noob in this area, what board will be the easiest for me to set up and work with my accessories/drivers, and are there any known good step by step tutorials for this or any special threads in here I should read for that matter?

Hi Temo,
Did you make a decision on which Mesa board you're going to use ?
Looks like the main difference between the two is that the 7c81 requires additional breakout boards connected via the three 26 pin ports in order to connect anything to it.
The 7i76 has the connections built-in on the board.
