The RTAI dev is working on kernel 5.4 RTAI packages for Debian Bullseye soon, and wants to test these changes on different hardware before it rolls out. Please test rebooting and shutdown.
ACPI power states have been removed, this should improve performance but may require holding power button down after the system is halted as software shutdown may not work properly.
Is this a problem for anyone and is software shutdown required?
Debian packages:
github.com/NTULINUX/RTAI/releases/tag/v5.3.3-beta
To test LinuxCNC against it, you have to build from source for now:
cd linuxcnc-git-tree/src
./autogen.sh
./configure --enable-non-distributable
make
sudo make setuid
cd ..
. ./scripts/rip-environment
Then:
latency-histogram
Or:
linuxcnc

So, if we can have software power-down I would encourage it.

When I first started using LinuxCNC the RTAI kernel did not support software shutdown. And it was annoying. Especially as my mill doesn't have a power-down button. (It has a switch which turns on a PSU which closes a relay, then that relay is kept closed by motherboard USB power, which is turned off by software shutdown.ACPI power states have been removed, this should improve performance but may require holding power button down after the system is halted as software shutdown may not work properly.

OK, I will add power states back in. The very next step is RTAI kernel 5.4 Debian packages, just want to make sure these changes work for other people so I'm not changing too much at once.
Cheers!
