Trouble with LinuxCNC and Gantry stepper motor setup. was created by Revinvoss
Trouble with LinuxCNC and Gantry stepper motor setup. I have search for a long time to find anyone who knows anything about how to set up LinuxCNC to run the Y and A stepper motors in tandem, or jointly.
There seems to be many people who have done this but have very vague explanations on exactly how to do it.
I have come so far setting up this CNC router table only to come to a dead stop.
If there is anyone who actually knows how and would kindly lead me through it, I will be glade to give the needed info on what I have for there wise input. Also be very thankful too.
I would really like to do some routing on the table.

What hardware do you have?
At least for Mesa hardware and parallel ports, the GUI configurators
(pncconf amd MesaCT for Mesa and stepconf for parallel ports)
know how to setup tandem axis for gantry machines.

I've done this with a CNC plasma..... It's not too bad from the linuxcnc setup side of things. The hardest part is generating the gcode to do what you want. it's not too bad (programs like a lathe most of the time).
To run the y and a at the same time
G01 y5 a180 f50 that will turn the bar 180 degrees while y travels 5 inches in sync with each other.

CNC Interface Board ST-V3, and 4 WANTAI DQ542MA drivers for X,Y,Z,A from wantmotor.com
Low Profile Dell G1FN2 25 pin PCie 1-port IEEE1284 Parallel PCI Express Board.
Stepper motor Model: WT57STH115420A-X1-7000 there are 4 total.
just to be clear, the stepper motors do run when using the stepconfig wizard, the question I would ask is, will the joints Y, A run in tandem from the LinuxCNC job interface? Does the application recognize the two as one joint and move them accordingly.

jimmyrig, I am very new to this and do not know much about altering the g-code, sorry not sure what to do there.
The Premier Plasma table table and computer setup all worked great when it was windows. The computer died and I chose to go the linuxcnc rout with CNC wood router. I did not know this was going to be a 2+ year setup. I would have sold this thing and bought a small wood router setup with everything pre-installed ready to go.

Yes, if they were selected as tandem axis during configuration.

I thought you had a parallel port setup ( using stepconf to create configurations )

I do. I was able to get the Z stepper working, as it had a low voltage issue and was only able to jog in the up direction when I clicked on the jog arrows in config wizard. was also able to find the gantry config in the config setup when I opened Linuxcnc app. I am now needing to locate a helpful tutorial on Homing the joints. Have not found any yet. Can not do anything until this is done.

There is the LinuxCNC homing documentation:
linuxcnc.org/docs/html/config/ini-homing.html
There are also some you tube videos around
that will show up if you google "linuxcnc homing tutorial"
