It's hard to say. The way to tell is to boot from the LiveCD and run the latency tests.

You might want to try both the 8.04 and the 10.04 version latency tests. See which one test better.
If they do not test well go to...

Okay so i did the latency test on my desktop with it installed, i get:
.................................................Max Interval(ns)..............Max Jitter(ns)..............Last interval(ns)
Servo thread (1.0ms):......................1725905........................729400.............................9964XX <---XXX is numbers that are rapidly changing
Base thread (25.0us):........................760064........................735759................................24XXX
How's that?

Dreadful. Really horrible.
Look at that troubleshooting page and see if switching graphics drivers helps.
As it stands, that machine will not work.

I dont understand. i have a pentium4 with 2gb ram, with Nvidia Quadro fx 1000 graphics... do you mean i should try it with just the on board mother board graphics?
it said to try to push your computer by installing stuff... i opened up a ton of programs like gimp, word processing, powerpoint, excel, and tried to push it.
Here are the values when i dont have any programs open other than the latency tester and have moved the window around:
.................................................Max Interval(ns)..............Max Jitter(ns)..............Last interval(ns)
Servo thread (1.0ms):......................1097110........................100605.............................9964XX <---XXX is numbers that are rapidly changing
Base thread (25.0us):........................147222........................122917................................24XXX

EMC2 does not need a powerful computer. (in fact some of the most suitable PCs seems to be certain of the cheap Atom Mini-ITX boards.)
However, it does need a computer which reliably hands back CPU to the Realtime system when it is meant to, and yours is not doing that.
You could try using the onboard video (EMC2 is not graphically intensive) or using the alternative video drivers described in the troubleshooting link posted earlier.

What will happen if i use this computer for my machine? Will i lose steps?
I tried running the livecd on another desktop but for some reason an error popped up saying some along the lines of "Your session only lasted 10 seconds....." I dont know why that happened because the livecd has worked on that computer before. downloading the new iso and going give that a try. hopefully that computer has good latency. Since my mom uses it one a week, i can just copy her files over to the spare desktop i have, so that i can use that one. I can boast that the "new" one that she gets has a faster processor and better graphics card.

Okay, so i tested the 2.4.4 livecd on my old computer that doesn't even have a graphics card (just onboard), here's what i got (looks good to me):
.................................................Max Interval(ns)..............Max Jitter(ns)..............Last interval(ns)
Servo thread (1.0ms):......................1020567..........................22047.............................998XXX <---XXX is numbers that are rapidly changing
Base thread (25.0us):...........................46633.........................21707................................2XXXX

The correct number of steps will be output, but it is likely that the rate will be so uneven that the physical components won't be able to follow.
In fact, that latency was so bad that there is a chance that you would get following errors. This is possible even with stepper motors if the motion controller spots that the number of steps that have been sent is far enough from the number which should have been sent to put the machine out of position.
The new machine with 22k Latency looks a much better choice.
