Problem loading file was created by allenwg2005
After a one year absence from my machine (and with little knowledge on how to use it in the first place) I'm back at it.
I have the first of what will likely be a long list of what you folks would consider really stupid questions.
Please bare with me.
I wanted to start with the following:
I tried to load a file today and got a message that reads like this.
Near line two of /Home/Allen/linuxcnc/nc_file/….................... bad character '\357' used
I have copied the first 30 lines of code, I don't see any “bad characters” in this file.
Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, or tell me what is wrong please.
Thank you in advance, Allen

Hi
Please attach the actual file.
It is highly likely there is a non displayable character code in the file.
If it does not show up in a good terminal editor, will be able to find it through a hexeditor
regards

According to a little google search "It's a UTF-8 byte order mark." The suggestion is to delete that line and type it over again. Also make sure you only edit the files with text editors like Gedit, Notepad++ etc.

Arceye, I've attached the file.
John, I should have thought of a google search myself, I'll try retyping with gedit.
Thank you both.

I just loaded this file in "Leafpad", what's more I put on my glasses!
As much as I would love to have “Z25.” inches of Z axis travel it's not even close to that!
I need to have a look at my CAM program and figure out how it got that value.
That's not to say this is the problem, but I expect when I change that figure I can move on to the next head scratcher.

So much for optimism.
I have tried to rewrite the line of code and save it –no joy-!
I have changed the value in Z, didn't help!
I have the same problem as originally stated.
If someone could look at the file I attached earlier I'd appreciate it.
It seemed simple enough at a glance, but things are rarely simple or easy in this arena.
Thanks again, Allen

I just noticed my attachment didn't go through earlier.
I hope I'm doing this correctly this time.

OK, I guess I have to ask the really really stupid questions!!!
How is it I can't attach a file?
Step by step directions please.
Geez!! I used to know how this was done.

The forum should accept .ngc files ( I think ?) but the default for everything is just to rename to a .txt extension which will always be accepted.
