Hi Alan,
I installed the libboost-all-dev as suggested, but it still didn't work.
Taking the info that is posted on a github page, to the effect that OpenSCAM doesn't work on Ubuntu 12.04, I've concluded that I'm wasting my time and few remaining little grey cells, so I've removed it from my system. Any other recently installed files will just have to stay there.
Thanks for your input,
Regards,
John
PS if anyone reading this can suggest an alternative 3d gcode simulator/visualiser, please post.

Well, there is
Cutviewer
, though that is more a suggestion than a recommendation. It is neither Free nor free and only appears to run on Windows.

Hi Andy,
Cutviewer does seem to rule itself out, I'm afraid.
I did wonder if there was a way in Axis to alter the thickness of the tool path line as displayed.
This might also give the visual effect I'm looking for.
