I load ubuntu, but the computer immediately gives me errors when the home screen appears that it cannot load various gnome components like the trash and the screen switcher.
it takes forever to then load EMC and will only do it from terminal.
It then spits out this when I try to load Mill

could you post your configuration hal file as an attachment ,
the error is in the loadrt lines at a guess , but also could be some word wrap problem also
it's easier to load the file , than to copy and paste and introduce errors etc .
is your installation up to date using update manager etc
you need to have ubunto stable before running emc , it could be an update was being performed early on giving you the problem

Did you use a word processor to edit your config instead of a text editor?

Yes I did,
I have purchased a router online and I am going to wait until I have the machine networked so I can post unaltered hal files to the boards.
Probably mid next week.

Yes, unfortunately...
But I will be using my linux box from now on to edit the code.
Just as soon as the fleabay router comes in.

THX John
for your notepad++ hint.
I was looking around for a better editor than notepad..
I like your choice.
I'm also used to edit the emc2 files via network and my main (windows ) PC.
Mike
P.S.
The only small thing im missing is a BASIC filter, as I do some BASCOM coding for AVR's...

ok,
I have the router and wireless adapter installed finally.
It's my last week in college so the pressure is severe right now.
I am currently simulating a 2.3 million character program in X5 while re-installing 10.04 on the mill box so the wireless will work properly.
As soon as the system is updated and stable I will start on the code again.
But at least I got one thing out of the way while I was gone, I got my dream job offer and am now working for a company that has all the cool toys. I'm in a Mazak Intergrex cell working with 9 of the Intergrex 200-IV ST 9 axis mill turns , 2 of the new Matsuura Cubelex 3500s, and the NEW "only one in the USA" Mori Seiki NMV 3000.
Makes the Campro's I use now look like a hammer and chisel!

Good luck with the new job.
It would be interesting to hear how the controllers on the pro machines compare to EMC2.
