Hello.
I found an old cnc lathe with bad electronics (Fanuc 5T control) to retrofit it with linuxcnc like this
www.veda-bg.com/pictures/CP%20586.2.JPG
www.veda-bg.com/pictures/CP586.1.JPG
www.veda-bg.com/pictures/CP586.3.JPG
The main spindle is 3 phase induction motor 25kw
Can i use it with encoder and inverter as C axis with live tooling?
Is possible to change ways with linear rails in a machine of that size?
What extra axis can add because now is standar 2 axis lathe?
How can control tool turret from linuxcnc with classiclader ?
A machine of that size (total machine weight is 5tons)
how many kw servomotors need for Z & X axis ?

The original servos are probably simple brushed DC servo amps that should be easy to control with Linuxcnc.
Induction motors generally don't lend themselves to being used as servos. You may need to replace that and modify the drivetrain to use the spindle as a c axis.
Not sure about adding profile ways. Sounds like a very big job to do right. On the order of building your own machine from scratch.

Apparently the DMG lathes with a C axis have a pneumatically engaged worm gear for indexing operations. This is probably the best way to get stiff control.

Do you have a photo/video to understand how this system works?

this older controles are not the best way to start a Retrofit as they got not the modern style builds and you spend money you better invest in newer technologie

Machines with Fanuc 5 controls would be 1977-1980. The servo motors will be black cap dc, the larger ones made by Gettys, drives will more then likely be scr, not transistor. They are rugged, but not fast, they also don't have tachs, the Fanuc control generated the analog tach signal for the drive, you must provide a tach signal to the drive or it will run away. As far as I know, this has been accomplished in LCNC. Encoders 0n black cap motors were usually 1024 cpr.
Most machines of that era used dc spindle motors with a dc drive and contactors for forward and reverse. I would double check, as far as I know , Ac drive technology was still a few years away. My guess is you probably have either a Fuji or Mitsubishi dc drive and motor . The first Fanuc AC spindle motors and drive showed up on the 6TB/6MB , these machines usually had yellow cap dc motors.
With a front and rear turret, the front turret will be X+ programming, the rear will be X- with G2 and G3 reversed.
There have been several similar type Mazak lathes from that era done with Lcnc , maybe one of the owners could lend some insight.

Machine is from 1981.
This is the label from the machine.
The spindle motor is brushed dc can i drive it with this igbt module via pwm?

(i have already this module)
This the spindle motor that has the machine

Probably analogue voltage velocity command, so you are looking at
Pico PPMC
,
General Mechatronics
or the
Mesa 7i77
(Though there are a few other options too: wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?LinuxCNC_Supported_Hardware

It looks like this machine has never been used beyond one test cut. Why would you want to fit linear rails if the original slide ways are straight and unworn?
