Take some pictures of the USB stuff in BIOS.
There should be an option for some kind of emulation, it seems that is off.

Mark, if you go to the linux.org site and onto downloads page, there is a link to the stretch ISO. Did you try that?
www.linuxcnc.org/testing-stretch-rtpreempt/
grab the amd64.iso

But re using mint, I was using one of these from Mint that I had lying around from ages ago.
www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=36

And I just ran Tommy's script.

That Stretch 64 Iso was the first one I tried.
Thanks for the link to Mint. I'll try that.

Do not use the Cinnamon edition, it might have issues with RT kernels and graphics.
Use Mate of XFCE.

Well, it turned out that the MoBo Bios backup battery was completely flat. I replaced it, and then the Mint Iso worked. The stretch ISO still hung up the CD-Rom step, although both have the same Debian 9 installer.

So I got Mint installed, but something is unstable. I have booted it four times, and each time, about a minute after loging in, it freezes up.
Once, when that Mint "Panels" pop up came, the other times while I was loaded this thread in the internet browser to look up what to do next.
Once, I froze as soon as Rods mugshot loaded. I am starting to suspect his Karma ;)

I am starting to regret buying this Gigbyte Brix. It is a real PITA. At this rate I might also start getting Oroids.

Mark

Sorry that I didn't photograph the Bios menu. I was happy to finally get passed that point.

Does that have a J1900 in it? That cpu has a bug that seems to cause it to crash if the Max C-state isn't set to 1 on most newer Linux kernels. Check the C-state settings in the Bios. The J1900 I have works fine on my Wheezy Linuxcnc install though, but the same MB has given me no end of grief in my HTPC at home. You'll need C-state set to that anyway for real-time performance.

I think I'm going to have to take another selfie complete with trenchcoat, shades and hat over my eyes!

Actually you really should blame PCW as he reported good results for a Zotac J1900 back at the time and it was not available down under. I'll take some BIOS photos becasue I played with every available setting trying to get the best latency. Very occasionally it freezes but never when running Linuxcnc. Or when I am looking back at me!

This one has a IntelĀ® CeleronĀ® Processor N3150 up to 2.08GHz

I set C1 state. Once again, Rods grimace doomed it :) It locked up again.

I would appreciate those Bios settings. Thanks.

I had similar and other strange problems with my seeed x86.
When i tried to load lcnc to external ssd, without touching w10 of the onboard emmc.
Gave up and used preloaded ssd via other mb. Worked out fine.

Then later to load the added on-board-mountable m2-ssd (wd blue) i disabled the emmc via bios and unplugged the external ssd. Was abled to make the usb install with no problem.
What i can see is that linux seems to recognice the emmc not as sdx....
Now i can use F7 and make an easy choice with hdd use as startup...
