Mesa 5I52 + 7I76, which computer was created by Holycross
New Mesa and Linuxcnc user. Previously built a mach3 + cnc4pc c11 lathe.
When using the PCI card do I have to worry about latency issues or is that issue
only for parrallel ports.
Mark.

Latency is not as important as with parallel port /software step generation systems,
but as a rule of thumb it should not be more than about 10 % of the servo thread
This is 100 Usec maximum latency for a standard 1 KHz servo thread

PCW,
Thanks.
I'm looking at 3 possible MB.
1. ASUS P861-MX-USB3 H61 with possible cpu's of celeron dual core or pentium dual core or i3/i5/i7.
Option #2
ASUS M5A78L-M-LX-V2 with possible cpu's of semprom or fx-4300 thru fx-8350
Option #3
ASUS F2A85-M-LE(FM2) WITH CPU'S A4-5300 THRU A10-5800K.
Any recommendations on minimum requirments?
Thanks for your help.

Those motherboards are probably overkill (though I have a h61 based motherboard with a low end core-duo and it has decent latency)
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131875
works well for me (~10 usec latencies and faster than the Atom MBs)

Dose that one even have a parallel port connector? And $114 bucks...
Go with www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131795R for $39 and add a $25 Athlon II X2 260 off of ebay. It's about the same as Pentium E6600 speed wise. And adding a video card, as apposed to using the onboard stuff will go a long ways on the latency.
Personally, I'm thinking of going with the first one on your list, only the AMD version. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131942 $60. I think it'll lend itself better to whatever future use I might have for it. But remember, it has an on board connector for the parallel port, and dose not come with the needed slot mount plug.
I posted all the boards I've been looking at on a goggle plus page here: plus.google.com/u/0/communities/112489991242646395390
All are AMD versions because I have a Athlon II X2 260 left over here from a DVR I upgraded to a Phenom II X4 965. Which is a whole lot faster btw, but a little pricey now days, relatively speaking...
As stated above, these are overkill for your needs, but parallel ports have been around much longer than I ever thought they would be, so who know's what we might need to run on these things in the future... Plus who says we'll only be using it for CNC stuff...
