Mesa 5i25 & 7i77 Problem was created by ChrisB
Hi
i bought a 5i25 and 7i77 pci card.
The led´s on the 5i25 are blinking for one very short time on startup and then they are off.
I tryed to figure out the problem, but no chance for me.
Just one hardware information.
My mesacard is on the second pci slot because the heatsink of the pcie grapiccard is very high.
For me it looks lite the mesacard is not found.
Here are the linuxcnc debuginformations and the lspci-v
Maybe anybody can tell me the problem.
Thank you very much

Looks like the card is not found, it may be a slot issue especially if this is an older motherboard
that had the slot vacant for a long time.
You can try cleaning the slot and 5I25 contact fingers and seeing if the card is recognized
easiest way I have found to clean MB slots is to find a piece of card stock, and dip it in 99% isopropyl alcohol
and slide it several times in and out of the PCI slot
that had the slot vacant for a long time.

The card was found but it has the wrong firmware for a 7I77 (it looks like it has 7I76 firmware installed)
To fix, the card must be flashed with the correct firmware:
sudo mesaflash --device 5i25 --write 5i25_7i77x2.bit
sudo mesaflash --device 5i25 --reload
You may need to install mesaflash if its not already installed:
sudo apt-get install mesaflash

I'm finally getting back on track with my LinuxCNC installation. While I'm trying to figure out why the latest ISO isn't capable of being successfully written to a a USB stick with dd (separate issue), I'm working on testing my hardware using an old version of LinuxCNC. I performed the following:
After that, I can toggle CR1 and CR2 on the 5i25 board without a problem. On the 7i77 board, I have the field LED lit so I'm good there. However, when I try to toggle the output ports that power my relays, I have no luck. The power at the terminals remains 0V. I can see the TRUE/FALSE change after I execute show pins after the setp command, so I know the operation is executed (and there were no errors, of course).
What I also see, though, is no flashing on the 7i77's CR15 (activity) and CR16 (fault) is ON. Per the manual, and per logical assessment, the watchdog is tripped and the outputs are prevented from sourcing. There are two things I don't understand though. First, based on a previous post near the start of this thread, it sounds like the commands issues should pet the watchdog (causing CR15 to flash and CR16 to go out). I don't see that. The second question, is if that assumption is incorrect, how do I disable the watchdog temporarily? At this point I just want to check the I/O of the Mesa board. My amps aren't even given drive power so there is no way they can move.
Thanks,
Alan

Pretty sure you need a real hal file to test sserial I/O

I messed up... I my reference to the earlier post was actually in a different thread:
forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/3045...77-first-steps#70656
Anyhow, it seems like it would be a 'normal' thing to do, disabling the watchdog so one could toggle output bits, read inputs, etc. That would all be part of a new machine checkout, to me... I also am not too sure what you mean by a 'real HAL file' and if I am testing with serial I/O. Does my testing work classify as that?
Thank you for your help. I definitely appreciate it. I'm pretty sure it won't be the last set of questions, LOL.

I think the timing of startup is pretty picky (whats the timing of the thread with halrun?)
There are 3 watchdogs involved (the host FPGA card and the 2 sserial remotes watchogs)
Its really a safety issue to have the watchdogs running so disabling them
is not something we suggest doing. If you want to toggle I/O, you can setup a minimal
hal file with watchdogs setup and toggle/check I/O with halcmd

Hi PCW,
I can certainly understand not wanting to run without watchdogs. In this case, however, I don't even have power to the servo amplifiers. I'm really just wanting to verify that I can turn on/off the relays (which won't do anything because nothing else is power on the machine, only the CPU) and read some of the inputs. So, safety isn't a concern at all here.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of LinuxCNC is not strong enough to know how to create a minimal HAL file or use halcmd. I was just trying to follow through some of the suggested steps in the other thread as it seemed to give instructions on how one could test the I/O section(s) of the system. That uses halrun. I'll have to read up on the other HAL stuff.
