Mesa 5I20 upgrade to new 2.7.4 software was created by tzak
I have had a successful 3 axis cnc router running on the mesa 5i20 card for many years now with Linux cnc ver 2.2. I think around 2008
I recently upgraded my computer and did a fresh install off the live cd of ver 2.7.4.
Now I am trying to get the new hardware (PC) and software working with the Mesa 5i20 card. I didn't think it would be simply loading in all my configuration file and it would work.
My old config seems to be running in Hostmot-4 and the newer config are in Hostmot 2.
I want to try to not have to re-wire my whole machine and was hoping someone could help me out so I can keep all my motor and encoder pinouts.
Here are some of my configuration files for reference of the old working system.
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction and get this thing working again.
Cheers

The machine will not need re-wiring (all the hardware will work in an equivalent fashion)
but unfortunately the hal and ini files will change quite a bit
I would look at the current 5I20 sample files for HostMot2 to get an idea of what hostmot2 pin
names and pin numbering are like.
The main change will be the renumbering of the GPIO pins and the fact that GPIO pins used as outputs
must be explicitly set to output mode in the hal file

I tried to go through the mesa configurator however once I get to pinouts for the motors and I/O everything was different. The p2 header doesn't have the pinout clearly for motor configurations.
Is it best to just do a rough configuration and then manually edit the HAL and INI files.
Is there no way to get Hostmot 4 configuration again?
Thanks

P2 pinout matches the 7I33 you already have if you use one of the common hm2 bitfiles
(SVST4_4 for example)
i would take a hm2-servo example file as a start and re-assign the pins as needed
The hostmot 4 configuration has not been supported for many years

I do not have the 7i33 card I was running directly off the 5i20 for all my pinouts when I had the Hostmot 4 config with only P2 and P3 I left P4 unused.
So i'm not how to get the SVST4_4 config to work.
I tried running the MESA configurator and started to go through that. However where can I change the pinout for all the encoders, PWM and such from the files it creates???
I can see where to change the Limits and enables however not the motor configs.

The pinouts are determined by the FPGA configuration loaded
The SVST4_4 pinout should be the same as the default hostmot2 pinout as far as encoder and PWM locations go

And I can use the SVST_4 config with the 5i20 without any problems. Do I just change the default hal file?

according to the documentation is says not to mix firmware configurations between the different mesa boards. And the SVST_4 not available in the 5i20 PNCconfig menus.

This is what I get when I use the SVST8_4 config after setting up my parameters the best I could.
