Does using a MESA card affect usable latency? was created by dman1965
I have been using LinuxCNC on an old Micron PC to control a Solsylva 10x9 through the parallel port for a few years. It has worked okay for what it does, but now I am looking at building a 4'x4' machine that I will need faster rapids on.
With my new build I would like to use a smaller motherboard and the mini-ITX machines I have been able to find so far on e-bay don't have the best jitter and latency numbers from what I have been able to find. I was wondering if using a Mesa 5125 card has any affect on the required latency of the computer.
I apologize if this is common knowledge that I am somehow missing. I didn't see it in the FAQ.

Yes, using any hardware step generator makes the system latency less important and latency does not affect the maximum
possible step rate.
A base thread is not needed at all with a hardware step generator so only a typically 1 KHz servo thread is required.
With Mesa hardware typically 50-100 usec of latency is fine and with appropriate setup even 500 usec is OK
(1/2 the servo thread period)
