Mesa 7i84 setup was created by BBowers
Hi, I need some help talking to a Mesa 7i84 card.
I have a Hardinge CHNC that I would like to get going again with the original drives and resolvers.
I have the following cards;
5i24_16 (loaded with 5i24_16_rmsvss6_8.bit firmware)
______7i49HV (connected to P4 of the 5i24)
______7i44 (connected to P2 of the 5i24)
_____________7i84 (connected to channel 0 of the 7i44)
_____________7i84 (connected to channel 1 of the 7i44)
_____________7i73 (connected to channel 2 of the 7i44)
I am new to Linux and it has taken some time but I can see the resolver working that I have hooked up to the 7i49hv, and a switch that I have hooked up to the 7i73 using “Show Hal Configuration” and the “watch” tab.
That just leaves the 7i84 cards to get working.
Both cards have the jumper in setup mode and a 5v power supply to the I/O section.
Each card has a yellow LED light at the top and bottom lit.
I believe they need to have the file 7I84R14.BIN loaded on to the 7i84 cards but not sure if I use Mesaflash, Hostmot2, or UFLBP and what the syntax would be.
Thanks

To work and be recognized the 7I84s need:
1. To be jumpered in operate more ( W2 "left" )
2. To have field and VIN power (W1 "left", +8 to +32V in TB1 pins 1,2,3,4, ground on TB1 pins 6,7,8)
There is no need to change 7I84 firmware (unless you have 7I84s that are more than 3-4 years old )

Well that was easy. I changed out the 5Vdc supply for a 15vdc and moved the setup jumper. It worked great.
Thanks PCW.
Thanks PCW.

That's a lot of IO. I have only 1 7i84 on my CNC lathe and still have many channels free. (I am using exactly the same Mesa hardware as you otherwise, except that I also have a pair of 8i20 as the servo drives)

My rough count that Hardinge used, came out to 20 outputs and 29 inputs not counting the analogs and bar feeder. I could get by with less, but because I'm an old turbine controls guy I would rather have more than enough than have to add a card later. It will be easier to group things together. The cards are also reasonably priced.
I was hoping that the original motor drives would burn up when I powered them up so I could go with modern system like you but they seem fine. I wont be doing production work with it so the 200 inch/min speed shouldn't bother me too much.
Its nice to know that you have already got one going. I know I will have some questions for you in the future if you don't mind.
