If you put those commands in a hal file, you must remove the "halcmd"s
(every line in a HAL file is a halcmd already)

This means you need to enable raw mode in the hal file by placing a "enable_raw" token in the hm2_eth command line

Unfortunately there will not be pins until the driver supports the new hardware (or a component that provides pins is wriiten)
but you can control the outputs with raw-write, for example:

halcmd setp hm2_7i96.0.raw.write_data 1
halcmd setp hm2_7i96.0.raw.write_strobe true

will turn on output 0

and

halcmd setp hm2_7i96.0.raw.write_data 33
halcmd setp hm2_7i96.0.raw.write_strobe true

will turn on outputs 0 and 5

The weighted_sum component could be use to create single bit output pins by netting its output data
to hm2_7i96.0.raw.write_data

I typed that into a terminal window to test and i must be doing something wrong. The output leds are not lighting up. I'm thinking of adding a RS485 relay board thru the board to bypass this. would this board work ok? www.ebay.com/itm/121971981946

I just verified that it works here using these example scripts:

freeby.mesanet.com/7i96.zip

Remove your output setup hal commands from your HAL file and run the scripts in the zip file:
(first launch LinuxCNC)

./7i96setup (setup need only be done once per LinuxCNC session)

./7i96all (turn all outputs on)

./7i96none (turn all outputs off)

you may need to make the scripts executable with
chmod +x 7i96setup
chmod +x 7i96all
chmod +x 7i96none

If this does not work, you may need to update your firmware

I have included a current 7I96 bitfile

If you are talking about adding extra IO using the RS485 port on the 7i96 then it needs to be one of the Mesa smart-serial cards:

However, you ought to be able to add a generic parallel-port breakout to the 26-pin header.

does it mean i can just attach db25 connector to it on straight cable without any additional electronics?
that would be beautiful if so.
gentleman, i've got another question.
step/dir outputs are both polarities, i'm using 7i96 with UHU servo controllers which are also both polarities input.
on UHU i left + inputs and negative attached to gnd output on mesa. do i need to do anything with negative outputs on mesa like connect them to gnd too?
both are powered from same atx power supply so power grounds are connected
or better will be to connect mesa+ to UHU + and mesa negative to UHU negative?

I've checked the mesa card I have here and all the neg our connected but I'd connect them both to the UHU negative anyway just to be safe. you want the signal clean as possible. as far as the db25 connection I'm not sure but I'm ordering this cable to see. www.amazon.com/CNC-xyz-Ribbon-Cable-Para...+26+to+parallel+db25
