7i80 kernel was created by billykid
Hello
I would like to try again the 7i80, the last time I was not able to make it communicate with linuxcnc.
I would like to know which kernel is to be installed for this card, maybe an iso already available somewhere.
thank you
Mauro

The Ethernet cards need to be used with one of the Preemt-RT kernels.

There is a live iso with Linuxcnc installed. It can be found here.
www.linuxcnc.org/testing-stretch-rtpreempt/

or you can install your distro of choice, with a Preemt-RT kernel, then install Linuxcnc. If you do this the simplest way is to use a distro that is supported by Linuxcnc's Buildbot, so you can install a pre-compiled copy of Linuxcnc. The instructions are in the Linuxcnc Documentation here.
linuxcnc.org/docs/html/getting-started/g...th_preempt_rt_kernel
Those instructions are for Debian 7 (Wheezy). You can safely ignore the warning about not using Debian 8. It works fine for both Debian 8 and 9 (provided you use the right buildbot repositories.)

My controller uses a Mesa 7I80HD on ip 10.10.10.2 with the desktop computer at 10.10.10.1 on a dedicated network card. I'm running on Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64bit. The Kernel files used were linux-4.9-69.tar.xz and patch-4.9-68-rt.patch. I have not had any issues. I do recall that there was a requirement to update to the mesa driver or perhaps the bit file about the time axis and joint changes were made perhaps a year ago to get the 7I80 working again after a recompile. I cant recall exactly what was needed to be done.

Your problem could be that pcncconf does not use the 10.0 IP range by default.

I have a 7i76e so it will look a bit different but you need to edit the ip address in this line in your hal file
loadrt hm2_eth board_ip="10.10.10.10" config="firmware=hm2/7i76/7i76e.BIT num_encoders=1 num_pwmgens=0 num_stepgens=5 sserial_port_0=2xxxx"

I posted this as information for billylkid that the configuration I use has been working fine with the kernel I mentioned. There is really no need to use older versions of linux to get the 7I80 board communicating. I do not have any issues with my configuration.

When you say "change ip" do you mean change the 7I80s IP address?

The 7I80 has 2 selectable (via on card jumpers) IP addresses:

1. A fixed 192.168.1.121 address
2. A EEPROM address that defaults to 10.10.10.10 but can be changed to anything

The EEPROM address can be changed with mesaflash
