Yet another MESA question!

Hello,

I have been looking at the 7I40 HV for some time, the brush DC drives currently in my possession require 60 VDC tachos for feed back and there is no way I'm gong to find those for the tiny little motors I'm using!

I currently have a 5I25 and 7I77 and would use 3 of the 4 available amplifiers from a pair of 7I40 HV as dual loop drive for 3 axis with the 6 channels from the 7I77 (3x for internal PWM command and feedback and 3x for the external feedback loop with linear encoders - all tied together in the HAL). In the future if a 4th axis was needed I would either get another 5I25+7I77 pair or potentially go with a different anything I/O solution and use steppers, most likely I will want a 4th rotary axis and tool changer someday.

Anybody done this? The 7I40 HV looks like a fairly priced + capable driver card, I just wouldn't be using the PC 105 form factor so I would have to cook up a few custom cables to utilize the 50 pin headers on the 7I40 HV.

Any encouragement, discouragement or arm twisting would be appreciated. Just looking for a sanity check before I pull the trigger.

Thank you.

Disregard, the 7I77 has -10 to 10 analog (per channel) for speed and direction and the 7I40 HV takes PWM and a discrete input for direction...

I'll keep looking.

The 5i24 is probably the cheapest way to drive the 7i40.

Mesa has two separate product lines, the 50-pin cards like the 5i24 and the 25-pin ones like the 5i25.

But, it is all just wires and software. It might be possible to hook a 7i40 up to the extra port on the 5i25.
The 7i40 uses 6 pins per motor and the 5i25 only has 17 IO pins, though, so you can't _quite_ run 3 motors.

If you have the slots then you can fit both a 5i24 and a 5i25 in the same PC.
You can connect a 7i77 to one of the ports of the 5i24 too, if you want.

Is the adaptor for the job.

Isn't a 7i90 significantly cheaper than a 5i24? Or is there a reason it wouldn't be a good choice?

I had forgotten about the non-PCI options. The 7i90 needs a parallel port, but if one is available it would do the trick.

There is also the ethernet-connected 7i80 HD that ought to work nicely with the 7i40.

The Ethernet 7I93 is also a option if 2x 50 pin connectors are sufficient

Hello again,

Thank you for all of the replies! I think the 7I93 looks interesting and with the 2x 7I40 HVs looks to fit my requirements and budget. I'll use the 5i25 and 7i77 I already have for the extra linear axis encoder inputs as well as my spindle, tool changer, GPIO, etc. Hopefully bringing the rotary and linear feedback of each axis through separate HW into the HAL won't cause too many headaches.

Thank you again!
