I am using a 7i96 in a plasma cutter.
I am thinking of mounting a THCAD-10 in the plasma cutter and powering it from a 24V-5V buck converter also mounted in the plasma cutter with the 24V sourced from the field power supply.
I assume this would mean tying the 0V rail of the 5v logic power supply to the 0V rail of the field power supply.
Is this likely to cause any problems or would I be better served powering the THCAD directly from the 5V logic power supply. Probably around 2-3 metres from the control panel to the plasma cutter.

I suspect its better to use 5V from the 7I96's encoder pins, say using CAT5 cable
but in any case a twisted pair for the frequency out.

I am using a locally mounted buck converter to power my THCad board. Mine is mounted in a screened box near the plasma power supply. So far it has worked fine.

I think I'm with PCW with this one. I had a 5.0m cable and while I put my THCAD in the control box, I did a lot of testing with divided voltage in the 3-6 volt range and never saw any appreciable voltage loss across that cable.
