For info,
With a Mesa Ethernet board set up, is there a threshold for ping times to/from the board?
I don't have the board next to me ATM, but was pinging 64bits of data (from memory) and getting figures around the 0.4 ms mark on average with Deb Stretch and bundled preempt rt kernel.
With a 16 bit board, is it more reasonable to do this test using 16 bits of data to get better information?
Is this reasonable and perhaps even more importantly, is this a worthy metric of throughput to the machine worth worrying about?
Cheers,
Marty.

Ethernet bits and computer ( processor, memory etc ) bits are not the same thing, and it has no relevance to what you are trying to figure out.
Ethernet can handle much bigger packet sizes. I remember the time when you could ping a windows 2000 computer with a single packet over 2kB and it completely freeze, only hard reset would bring it back to life. Oh happy days !

at the new hardware 100M/1G you will never run in packet loss
at th highest rate of 4Mbit/8mbit you may need at realy exesiv data transfer
