sudo mesaflash --board_type --readhmid
for normal PCI or PCI-E cards
For ethernet:
sudo mesaflash --device 7i96 --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid
Granted your board IP is set at 10.10.10.10 , or 192.168.1.121 from factory
For flashing the card
sudo mesaflash --device 7i96 --addr 10.10.10.10 --write name_of_the_file.bin
the bin file needs to be in the same directory as mesaflash utility
then
sudo mesaflash --device 7i96 --addr 10.10.10.10 --reload
then
sudo mesaflash --device 7i96 --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid.

A few minor nits:

1. You normally write .bit files with mesaflash
2. You don't need sudo for Ethernet cards
3. You don't need to specify the IP address if the card is set for 192.168.1.121

So for the 7i96 I power it up with 5v into the P3 connector while connected to ethernet.
Having downloaded mesaflash I make sure the correct .bin file is in the same directory. - Which .bin file do I choose and where is it? The file I downloaded from Mesa contains .pin and .bit.
Also which file do I choose? are there explanations of which ones are for which setup somewhere?

Confused on IP address now with the two comments. Documentation says default is 192.168.1.121 - Does this change Tommy's instructions? If so how?

Do I need to flash the 7i85s?

Also as a seperate can I connect my home switches direct to the inputs and drive them from that? Looking to go with fotek proximities NC which have a 6v to 30v operating window. Any help with if they need a seperate power supply or not and how to wire would be cool too.

Cheers

forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/3559...ethernet-mesa-boards
Ip is set from the factory to 192.168.1.121 but there is a jumper on the board to have it set at 10.10.10.10.
7i96 inputs can be used for NPN or PNP switches so any will do, just the wiring changes a bit.
You do need a separate power supply for the field power on the 7i96 and you can use that same source to power the switches.

If you have a 7I85S you will need 7i96_7i85sd.bit firmware
The IP address (192.168.1.121 or 10.10.10.10) depends on 7I96 jumpering
(see the 7I96 manual)
There is no firmware on the 7I85S

Looks like the 7i96_7i85sd firmware is not in the 7i96 zip file but here it is:

freeby.mesanet.com/7i96_7i85sd.bit

You can connect the proximity sensor outputs directly to the 7I96 isolated inputs
If you have NPN sensors you would connect the 7I96 input common to +12 or +24V
If you have PNP sensors you would connect the 7I96 input common to ground

Are there any wiring diagrams anywhere for the 7i96 and 7i85 combo?

You will need a DB25 cable, if you already do not have one.
Get is from:
mesanet.com
mesaus.com
eusurplus.com

Ha I have no idea why my IP is Chinese though when I login on a new Apple device to my iCloud it does normally tell me that someone in London/MiltonKeynes or anyone else down south is logging on; I'm based in Lincoln though.....

Any chance you could take a photo of one and upload it here?

I have a block to 26 pin block to DB25 cable coming in the post tomorrow.

Cheers
