Mesa 7i73 wiring question

If you were using say a Mesa 7i76e, with a PC built into a remote console, would it be possible to run the smart serial RS422 on the unused pairs on the ethernet cable from the 7i76e and split them out at the PC side to a 7i73 powered from 5 volts stolen from a USB port?

It means there is no GND signal.

It would be a real neat trick if it could be done.

Ethernet uses 4 wires, Mesa 7i73 need 6 for power, gnd, two TX and two RX.
Only 8 wires in the CAT5 or 6.
But you could power it from another source and use the shielding fro GND.

Yeh, you should be able to steal power from USB. So just use the shield for GND then?

Yes.
And use the same pair for Tx and the other pair for RX.

Be very carefull. I had a f.. problem getting a high voltage/current short circit over the 7i73 gnd down in the 7i76e... grilling both of them.
Floating grounds is never good. Connect with hem at least via resistor, paralleled by low inductive capacitor.
