7i96 quit working was created by mrmike
I was changing out from 2 parallel boards to a 7i96 ovet the last week. I had everything going except the spindle relay turning on. I need a ground to set the relay on for th erouter, and didn't realize for a bit that I needed a diode for this to work. I got the relayto snap on and off with F9/F10, but now, none of the axis will move. The counter for the Z axis counts, but nothing happens. I flashed the .ini files into the board, power cycled the board, the computer, and all the electronics. Did i fry the board. Attached are the ini and hal files, in case.

Is the 7I96 5V OK?
Are the +step and +dir outputs at 5V when LinuxCNC is not running?
Are the +step outputs at 0V when LinuxCNC is running (but not moving)?
Do the dir outputs change from 0 to 5V or 5V to 0 when you jog in different directions?
if any of those things are not true, it suggests that there has been damage to the 5V components on the 7I96
How was the relay connected?

In reference to ground on the input, I have +5 on STEP0- and DIR0-. The STEP0+ and DIR0+ are connected to the driver. If I remove all wiring from board, the voltages do not change.
When I home the Z axis, the voltages do not change.
I have the relays connected to +12V to one end of the coil, and a ground to come from the board.

Unfortunately I can't really tell anything from that.
To see what's going on, I would need at the minimum: the voltages on STEP+ and DIR+
1. With LinuxCNC running
2. With LinuxCNC not running
Not sure what you mean "ground to come from the board",
but there should be no connection of any relay wiring to
anything but 7I96 SSR outputs.

I have 0V on both + pins. at all times.
I was connecting a ground throught the ssr on pin 13/14 TB3 when this happened

if you have 0V on the step+/dir+ outputs when LinuxCNC is not running
its likely the driver chip for these pins (a 74ACT541) has been damaged
either through external EMI or from a spike on the 5V supply

It looks too small for me to replace with what I have here. Back to parallel boards. Thanks for the help.

Mesa can replace the part if its just one part that's damaged
If something bad happened to the 5V so multiple parts are damaged
its probably not repairable
