Additional encoder on 7i92-7i77 - Do i need a new bitfile? was created by Henk
HI
I have a milling machine (3 axis) that is already running great on LCNC with Mesa 7i92+7i77.
The machine is fitted with 1 hand wheel per axis. These hand wheels are based on an encoder with 1000 pulses per rev (4000 in quadrature).
I would now like to add a 4th axis and maybe a spindle encoder.
Is it possible to move two of the hand wheels to P1 on the 7i92 and use the 7i77 encoder inputs for the spindle and 4th axis?
Would i need a new bitfile for this or would the GPIO speed be sufficient for a 1000(4000) ppr encoder on a hand wheel?
Regards
Henk

7i77x2 I think.
I checked for an existing bitfile with additional encoder inputs on the other header not it doesn't look like there is one.

7i77 can be set in mode 2 that will give you 2 more encoder inputs on the input header, but i think it is for 100PPR encoder for MPG.
And the P1 header is fast enough , for single ended encoders at 5V.

Thanks. I will give it a try.
When in mode 2, does that add 2more encoders on the FPGA or does it just drop the threshold of those inputs so it can trigger on 5v?
Thanks

It adds them as MPG encoders, so limited speed, and it does work with 5V encoders on the first 4 inputs on the 7i77.

The 7I77 MPG inputs are faster than a software encoders but still limited
by the input circuitry to say 10-20 KHz max
If you use the 7I77x2 configuration you do have 6 additional multiplexed encoders
available on P1 (if you enable them in hal) these can be used as 3 standard encoders
if you wish though they will be numbered oddly:
enc 6 first encoder on P1
enc 7 clone of enc 6
enc 8 second encoder on P1
enc 9 clone of enc 8
enc 10 third encoder on P1
enc 11 clone of enc 10

Nice, thank you, that opens up some possibilities, so very glad to know that.If you use the 7I77x2 configuration you do have 6 additional multiplexed encoders
