Mesa 7i96 touch probe connection was created by kbec
I have a touch probe I bought and wanting to hook it up to my machine. I have a Mesa 7i96 card.
The probe has 3 connections, one to 5V power supply, one to power and ground, and the other says probe signal output.
The probe says it is an open drain circuit. When it touches, the output shorts to ground and then the movement is supposed to stop.
I understand it in theory, but I don't see how to hook it up, or set it up with the Mesa card and Linux CNC.
Thanks

The 7I96 inputs can sense a short to ground _if_ the input common is
connected to a positive voltage. If you already have limit switches etc
wired this way, it should just work. If not, you may need to add an external
pullup resistor if you don't wish to re-wire the limit switches etc.

Connect I/O power to the input common (TB3 pin 12) and the probe signal to one of the inputs.

I don't have any sensors, limit switches or anything else hooked up, just my stepper drivers and motors. For the most part, that seems to be working ok. Now I am trying to get my touch probe working.
So you are saying hook up:
5v + to TI3 IN COMMON
Signal to TI3 IN0
Then where does the ground hook up to?

It is just a small Sherline mill I have. From what I have read I may not need limit switches if my soft limits are right. So for now I don't have anything like that and may not even do it. Only the really high end Sherline offerings even have those.

Send ground to signal ground - you'll want to make multiple connections to this so you'll likely want a terminal block.
I just have home switches and soft limits - this is the minimum I would run (unless you have absolute encoders).

Well, it seems limit switches are the way to go, then add the probe. Is there anywhere you guys know where the wiring is documented?

I got my limit(home) switches working, but my probe isn't. I have my limit switches on 24v while the probe is 5v. My limit switches are using pins 1, 2,and 3, and my probe is on pin 4 on my Mesa card. The LED's light for 1,2 and 3, but not pin 4. I checked the probe output with my voltometer and it seems to be working,
In pncconf I set it as External Control > Probe In, when I run my machine, and trigger it I don't see anything when I look at the halscope.
Do I have it set up correctly?, Is there somewhere that discusses setting up a probe like this with a 7i96 card?
Thanks

Where is the 7I96's input common connected?

I have the common - at the IN COMMON pin if that is what you mean.
