Mesa board suggestion for linear motor/stepper combo? was created by BMac71
I’m wanting build my first LinuxCNC machine & looking for suggestions on which Mesa board/boards would be best for my situation. I’m needing to control 2 axes (X,Y) with Kollmorgen linear motors driven by AMC B15 servo drives & Renishaw RGHZ readheads/scales, and the Z axis which will most likely be a Chinese closed loop stepper setup. This is a last minute decision to give up on Mach3/4, so I’m still quite new to the Linux/Mesa world. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What type of control do Kollmorgen drives use ?
Step/dir, analogue +-10V, some type of serial, or one of the XXXBUS types ?

Nice.
I would use the 7i92/7i77 combo and use the second header on 7i92 for step/dir stuff.
Maybe there is something better, so might want to wait a bit for PCW to chime in, but i have used them so many times that i got used to them, right now on this table i have a 7i92 and a 6i26 and a 7i77, latter ones are installed and on all the time my big PC is on, but not using them much lately.

Thanks a ton, I’m going to go check those out right now. I wouldn’t be ordering until Monday so I’ll definitely be checking out what others have to say.

If your servos are step and direction, you may like to look at the new 7i95 board which includes encoder inputs.

Oops sorry, missed this. The 7i97 bundles it up in one package for +- 10v

Well, my Z axis will be step/dir, so I’m hoping to find the best board(s) to run the combination.

I think you will need 2 boards. There are a few ways to go.
a 7i76e with a 7i77 pluged into it is probably the most flexible
The 7i76e will give you spindle control and encoder, 2 x MPG, 3-4 analog inputs, 5 stepgens some of which can be repurposed into IO pins if not used, 32 inputs, 16 outputs. The 7i77 will do the 0-10v and encoders for you.
Plus the 7i76e is supported by pncconf so you do have a gui tool to configure the board. Some of the new ones are yet to be supported so need to be set up by hand. Which is not a bad thing for a more complex machine...

Thanks a ton for the info! I just ordered the 7i76e & 7i77. After much reading last night I’m pretty sure I’m also going to use another 7i76e + a THCAD on the plasma table I’m getting ready to start building. Once again, thanks a ton!
