I'm seriously considering switching my mill over to LinuxCNC and could use some guidance on the hardware side of things. Mill is currently being rebuilt and am rapidly approaching the control panel build stage.

Here's what I have:
4-axis step&dir
1 servo spindle. Can use S&D, 0-10v, or PWM. Has a dif encoder out from the drive.
2 analog inputs (FRO/SRO), would like a 3rd for Rapid override.
20-30 digital I/O (limits, drive ena/alm, PDB limits & valves, etc. Plus control panel buttons)
USB pendant (Vista)

Future expansion:
2 more S&D axis (ATC, maybe 5th axis)
4 encoders (3 scales, plus rotary on 4th)
I/O for ATC
Non-USB pendant/MPG (USB lag drives me nuts)

Here's what I've come up with, likley driven by an Odroid H2:
FPGA - 7i76E (32/16 I/O, 0-10V spindle, spindle encoder)
Daughter - 7i74 + 7i73 (24/22 I/O w/analogs for control panel stuff)

Future - 7i85 on 7i76E's 2nd expansion (4 encoder, 8 S&D)

Does this appear to be a workable setup, with reasonably painless future expansion?

Also... how is the 7i73 generally connected to field buttons/pots? 40p & 34p ribbon to a IDC40/34 breakout?

Thanks in advance to anyone who might shed some light on the near-endless Mesa combinations.

All that seems ok except no need for 7i74.
7i76E has an SSerial port that the 7i73 can be wired to.

Thanks much. The variety of interconnects is overwhelming.

So I'm guessing the 7i73 gets connected to the 7i76E (pins 15-20) with a CATx cable, one end RJ45 and the other with flying leads?

And a 7i74 would be used if someone wanted a convenient hub for significant expansion?

Yes and yes, there is a nice wiring explanation in the 7i76 manual by cutting an UTP or STP cable and wiring it with colours/pins and all.

Just be careful as the Mesa docs are for 568B wiring and as luck would have it the cable i had was 568A so I wondered why it didn't work. So check your cable wires first with google images

Rod - Just noticed your reply about paying attention to the cable... That certainly would have tripped me up.

By the way, your latest video on the 7i76E was timed perfectly. Well done.

I've ordered a 7i76ED and 7i73 and am about to jump in to the linuxcnc deep end.

Make sure you inflate your rubber duckie before you take the plunge in the deep end. :)

Too late!

Boards in hand, new computer loaded w/LCNC and I'm already bugging everyone here with "How do I...?" questions.

I am just kidding. I am sure will learn tons of nifty stuff and you will have lots of fun doing it.

Welcome to the tribe,
Ben
