hmmm. LinuxCNC is open and CR1 is still solid red. Does this sound like it is still a wiring fault as opposed to a linuxcnc config fault ?

Am i right in my interpretation of this, as meaning i should have W6 and W7 UP, UP as i only have one SSERIAL card and hence i need to terminate at the 7i73?  Or is there a typo and it means W10 and W11 should be up (i've only just noticed that in the para it says W6,W7 and then in the detail after that it talks about W10 and W11

"SERIAL PORT TERMINATION
The RS-422 serial port on the 7I73 can be terminated or un-terminated. Normally the 7I73 is the serial cable endpoint so the port must be terminated. W6 and W7 enable and disable the termination,

W10,W11   MODE
UP,UP Terminated (default)
DOWN.DOWN Unterminated"

I've worked out that it should be W10 , W11 and they default to UP, UP which makes more sense.

Should RX and TX cross between the 7i96 and 7i73 (TX to RX and visa versa). Even whilst I'm asking the question im thinking the answer is yes.

still no luck. CR1 is still solid red and nothing on CR2. Do the ini and hal files have any bearing on where comms will start successfully between the host controller (7i96 in my case) and a remote smart serial device such as the 7i73?

Yes W10 and W11 are both up.

On the serial connector starting from the top
20 Brown & Brown/White
19 Orange/White
18 Orange
17 Green/White
16 Green
15 Blue & Blue/white.

I must have a 568A colors as wires to 15 and 20 are swapped.

Opps pin1 is at the bottom

I'm running a 7i96 configuration so the 7i96 is alive.

Thanks all.

It was a wiring fault on my part. When i crossed TX and RX i must have wired a + to a - on one pair. Moral of the story, check, check and check again your wiring. And...just when you are about to give up..... check it again. Flashing green LED on CR2 and I can see the encoder count in HAL.

John - my HAL and INI started out life as the output of your config tool so will have to continue freehand. Now to link up the 2 MGPs to jog the 4 axis.
