Mesa 7i96S was created by JT
If your struggling with ethernet time out errors you may want to try 4.x kernel if using Debian. Also if you want to use your 7i96S with LinuxCNC 2.8 the instructions are here.

Just got word that the latest deb released today supports the Mesa 7i96S.
Might take a day or two to actually show up after you do apt update.

will debian 11.4 (12 from your post I install) recognize it? I mean, will pnccfg give an option for mpg at the inputs (I need two independent mpg wheels) or do I have to do additional work afterwards in the hal? I'm still waiting for the card so I'll let you know, in mesact 7.1 I also couldn't manage to assign MPG functions to the inputs at first glance. Thanks a lot

I don't use pncconf so you would have to ask in that section about that tool.

ok, the situation is the same in mesact, but I will see when the card arrives and when the system recognizes it, maybe it will change.

A friend of mine maintains the 2.8 package in the AUR (for Arch based distros). I've been running the 2.8.2 from this for over a year. I was able to get it to build 2.8.4 with minor changes to the PKGBUILD. My friend should be updating the package shortly.
Glade-GTK2 also builds from the AUR without headaches. Everytime I have to redo this LinuxCNC system I always try to use Debian first (not sure why). I got LinuxCNC to build but I had to abandon Debian for other issues. I always find Debian to be more of a hassle than it's worth.
Not sure what the "official" word on LCNC on Arch is being a rolling distro but Arch in general (or it's more user-friendly offshoots) are much nicer to deal with than anything Debian based.
