MESA7i96s with 7i84 Smartserial not connecting

Hi everyone.

I am new here. So far, I have built a couple of cnc machine control system (mostly retrofits of older machines). I used Linuxcnc for all of them with great success.
At the moment I am trying to get the combination of 7i96S & 7i84 working. Has anyone done this sucessfully? I checked and rechecked the wiring over and over again. I can not see an issue there.

Do I have to update the firmware of the 7i96s? With the 7i76e and 7i73 there was no need to modify anything (as far as I can remember).
There is just a yellow LED on when power is supplied to the 7i96s. No blinking in the 7i84. The 7i96s in standalone is working fine.
Is there a special setup I need to use here: "sserial_port_0=0xxxx" ??

Do you have field power supplied to both FIELDA and FIELDB on the 7I84?

Yes I have connected them. But only to one of the FIELDA and FIELDB each. It is a 5volt supply at the moment as I am testing the setup. Maybe this is too low? No connection to VIN though. Jumper W1 is left.

5V is too low (8V min)

I added a 24V PSU and now it works! Cool, thanks for the help.
