7i76e spindle problem: It runs, but only after reconnecting ENA

I have a really strange spindle problem: The spindle works, but only if I disconnect/reconnect ENA while LinuxCNC and the VFD are enabled.

I am using a MESA 7i76e.
The VFD is a YL-620. I use the same wiring as I found on the forum here :

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect everything as pictured.
2. Open LinuxCNC, turn on the machine/VFD, turn on the spindle in LinuxCNC.
3. Nothing happens.
4. Physically disconnect REV and ENA pins from the VFD.
5. Reconnect ENA pin. The spindle spins up immediately.

.hal and .ini files attached.

I did configure the VFD, including setting P00.16 to 1 to enable ENA/DIR mode.

Any idea what may be going on?

Sounds like ENA/DIR mode is not really set

Can you verify VFD operation with hardwiring or mechanical switches?

Yes, it works with physical switches (By bridging between XGND and FWD, the motor runs forward. A bridge between XGND and REV does nothing. A bridge between XGND and both makes it run backwards.)

Is that with ENA asserted?

I would expect this behaviour with ENA/DIR:

No motion unless ENA asserted
ENA+ DIR NOT asserted --> FWD
ENA+ DIR asserted --> REV

(dir may be inverted)

Yes, that is exactly the behavior I see when using physical bridges.

It was a wiring problem, it is fixed now. Thanks for your help, that made it easier to narrow down.

That was the final problem, everything in my machine is completely working, yay!

Do you know what the exact wiring issue was? I am having this same problem and have tried endless combinations. I’m using a Altivar32 drive, but it’s as if the enable and direction switches on the 7i76e never switch off… I have to physically disconnect direction pin to get the drive to reactivate… Thanks!

Sorry, I don't remember exactly - I think some pins were incorrectly connected on the TB4 connector. But I do not remember exactly which ones.

If the ENA output is always on it may be the you have the polarity backwards.

Thanks so much for the help, that’s exactly what it was! I didn’t realise that was a possible issue. It’s all working perfectly now with m3, m4 going on the right direction. Thanks again!
