Mesa 7i96s with 7i85s problem

Hi, I have problems to access the 7i85s. The 7i96s is flashed with the 7i96s-7i85s.bin firmware. I can't see the pins or anything of the 7i85s. The two cards are connected with a 25 flat cable from the P1 to the db25. Bothe cards have power and the LED's light as described in the manual. I can access the 7i96s through ethernet and it works fine.

Can anybody help please?

Thank you and kind regards, Peter

What does mesaflash readhmid return?
You can make a config for 7i96S and run it, then use the "show hardware configuration" from the "machine" menu to navigate through pins, see if there are 7i85s pins there.
Sorry for wague reply, but on the phone and never used a 7i85S so no idea how it communicates with 7i96S.

The 7I85S is a passive card so no pins with 7I85S in their name will
be created. The configuration just has added stepgens/encoders +
1 more sserial port (all on the 7I96S)

Thank you to both and Tommy and PCW. I did run the "show hardware configuration" from the "machine" menu, but only the 7i96s pins are shown. I will tomorrow (in Switzerland it's almost time to sleep) manually configure an encoder of the 7i85s and come then back to the forum.

... but only the 7i96s pins are shown ...

As PCW mentioned no pins with 7I85S in their name will be created. This could be confusing but easiest way to tell if the 7i85 is recognized would be to see how many encoders pins are showing up. (There will all be identified as 7i96s pins). If you see only one encoder channel then it is from the 7i96s. If you see 5 encoders channels then 1 is from the 7i96s and 4 are from the 7i85s (since the 7i96s has only one encoder). Also, if I remember correctly, the 4 additional encoders (from the 7i85s) will be on a different 'branch' of the 7196s tree view. You may then have to expand the tree view to be able to find them.

The problem is solved thanks to your hints, especially the last one from JPL. I found the encoder under the inm "pin", and their are four of them. I made a screenshot from  "show hardware configuration". May be it helps somebody with the same problem. Many thank's again!

Note: the inm encoders are slow MPG encoders on the 7I96S isolated input
pins on 7I96S TB3.

The high speed encoder inputs on the 7I85S will have names like
hm2_7i96s.0.encoder.NN.XXXX

The reason you only see one in the halshow tree is that you have a "num_encoders=1"
stanza in the driver command line in your hal or ini file.

Thank you very much PCW! That's very important for me, because I want to use glas scales as reference for the position of the axis. I was just happy to see the board.

The gaol of the project is to replace the old steppers with new closed loop ones and improve the accuracy of the mill. Even the PC has to be replaced, because it has a very old mainboard still with a parallel port. I fear, that all will break down one day and according to Murfy's law at the most inconvenient moment.

Kind regards, Peter
