You can't really see anything with fine resolution in halshow. You may need halscope for that.

I've only been using Hal for direction, tried the scope on Step pins. Everything else shows like position cmd postion fb velocity fb no velocity cmd tho due to step type.

I do have the 7I85s on the shelf I ordered with the 7i88 but think its a what I've done problem. Nothing showing on the scope. I'm no expert on scopes but managed it before with grbl ect. Tried a lot so far just seem to be going around in circles and not really making progress, latest trial was with a hm stepper example but you'll see what else I tried below that nulled out

Does GPIO41 show up as low in halshow?
Can you check if there has been a watchdog bite?

No alarm on watch dog, or no watch dog bite. Have increased time on that earlier.

hm2.7i94.gpio.041.in low
hm2.7i94.gpio.041.in_not high
hm2.7i94.gpio.041.out low

Actually I cannot see how that hal file would even load with:

num_encoders=8

Wait a second, a hal file with 8 encoders would not even load.

Are you sure the hal file you are editing is the one you are running?

I would expect something like this to happen if you specify more resources than available:

hm2_eth: discovered 7I96S
hm2/hm2_7i96s.0: Low Level init 0.15
hm2/hm2_7i96s.0: config.num_encoders=2, but only 1 are available, not loading driver
hm2/hm2_7i96s.0: failed to parse Module Descriptor 6
board fails HM2 registration
hm2_eth: in hm2_eth_reset
hm2_eth: rtapi_app_main: Invalid argument (-22)
./hm2-pidstepper.hal:43: waitpid failed /home/pcw/linuxcnc-dev/bin/rtapi_app hm2_eth
./hm2-pidstepper.hal:43: /home/pcw/linuxcnc-dev/bin/rtapi_app exited without becoming ready
./hm2-pidstepper.hal:43: insmod for hm2_eth failed, returned -1
Shutting down and cleaning up LinuxCNC...
hm2: unloading

Yes, I had originally changed to zero but I'll go double check number never made a difference, I didn't realise it'd effect it as later I'd like to fit it to the sserial for my index pulse but thats after I get it stepping
