7i96s and VFD analog feedback ?

Hello all,

I would like to wait for my spindle to be at speed before moving.

On my VFD (analog) I have a 0-10v input which I use with the SPINDLE+/-/out of the MESA board to control my spindle speed.

I also have a 0-10v output on the spindle to check when the spindle is at speed.

But I have no clue on how to use that with my board. All inputs pins shares the same common ground and I don't even know if there are just "on/off" or are able to read voltage ?

Thank for your help.

The 7I96/7i96S inputs can only read digital values so there is no
easy way to read an analog value. Is there any way to get digital
feedback from the drive (PWM or frequency?)

Also an encoder or something as simple as a single
optodetector or proximity switch could work with
a slotted disk on the shaft.

Yes my VFD as also a Digital Output for speed but I am really not sure about how to wire it. I can wire digital output from VFD to an input pin on the MESA but what about the VFD ground ?

MESA common input ground it already wired to a 12v transfo ground for my home switches.

Can you post a link to the VFD manual so I
can see what kind of digital output it has?

Here is the quick start manual :

What is probable interesting you the more is that diagram on how mine is set :

While thinking about it, if digital signal is simply an On/Off state whether there spindle is at speed or not. I could use this to command a small relay / opto so it would not cause issue with the common ground on the MESA inputs.

But I first need to figure out how the Digital Output work, cause I think this is a digital signal, not just an on/off.

I don't know if someone can help me but I really struggle with that VFD.

I have set the parameter 35 on AtSpeed, so theoretically B3 output when motor is at speed.

But I have two issues :

- After a power off of the VFD, it behave like parameter 35 is still on ZeroSpeed (thus parameter is correctly saved on AtSpeed). If I press any button on the VFD, it behave back correctly. VFD Bug ??

- When it is outputting 24V, I don't know what to do with it. It cannot activate a 24v relay (no enough power I guess) and I cannot wire it with my MESA input as all input ground are common.

You could connect the digital to a 7I96 isolated input
as long as you connect the 7I96S input common to
VFD 0V (assuming you can get the output to work)

Another option would be to delay spindle at speed
after every spindle speed change

Unfortunately, I cannot wire VFD 0v to the common input, as my common input is already wire to a 12v transformer used for my homing switches. Or I should use the VFD voltage for my switches but it feel a bit weird, it means the machine can't home without a VFD.

I think the easiest way is as you said, a delay. But, how do I declare this in the HAL file ?

If you have input common on the 7I96S connected to your 12V common it will work
If you have the 7I96s input common connected to +12V, it will not work.

There is a time delay component in hal

man timedelay
