Sometimes it does help, a lot, although only once in my experience, the rest (probably over 10) both sides worked better.
All VFD's i have used have separate ground pins for mains and for motor, probably have some LC filter inside but i never checked, waiting for one of those to die so i can open it.
Another thing i noticed with a cheap 2.2KW HY-whatever VFD was that grounding the motor wires on both sides would make it possible to use it without mains grounding at all, hence the above assumption on LC filtering.
