Mesa card minimum network speeds was created by oddwick
Ok so stupid quick question.  its been a minute, but im in the process of finally building my 4x8 router after getting moved.  I got a super snazzy computer cart for it and i had the idea to use an old router i had lying around to network all my machines so i can use one computer to control them instead of a dedicated one for each machine. to keep my cords to a minimum (and freakin trip hazards!), i was going to try and use wifi to connect to the router from the computer. before i start stretching cords, is this feasible?  i’ve googled and cant seem to find the minimum network speed for a 7i96 to be able to work. oh and this will be a dedicated network, probably no internet on a wifi N router (300mbps). if not im sure i can hustle up a cheap wifi 5/6 one too!

So you want to connect the mesa card/cards to the router (wired) and the computer to the router via wifi ?
Generally it's advised to connect the mesa card directly to the computer via a cable, no switch/hub/router involved.
I think network latency would be the issue. And each mesa card would have to have it's own IP, sorry if you already know this, but not everyone is wise to basic networking.

It will not be good for latency. Just tested to ping the Mesa card on the local computer - 0.15 ms, pinged another computer over WiFi - 2-4 ms.

ok that is the piece that i was missing! i was focused on throughput and thinking that there couldnt be that much data transfered to overload a network. forgot about latency.

how about an unmanaged switch or a hub? i know hubs arent great for congestion, but i would be only using one machine at a time so broadcast wouldnt be an issue. im just looking for a way here to simplify my wiring and reduce my physical footprint so any suggestions would be greatly welcome!

Easy, you have the hardware, connect stuff and test by running some gcode in "air cutting" mode, see if it drops the connection.
As for throughput, i have a very old USB to LAN adapter that i am pretty sure is USB 1.1 and it works fine for Mesa directly connected to it.
I also tested laptop to Mesa through a gigabit switch and had no issues but those were the only things attached to the switch.
And i would venture a guess that any access point will fail miserably and drop connections even if PC and Mesa are using LAN, not WiFi, at any point any request from WiFi goes to PC or Mesa and vice versa.

thanks tommy, gonna give that a try. i have some old parts lying around and i think i will stretch some cables and give it a dry run this afternoon out in the shop. when this is done, there will be 4 machines all with mesa cards and if this works out it will make life alot easier with just one station to control all of them. ill post after i run some tests...

oh and usb 1.1? thats some old stuff from the "plug and pray" days!

:) yes it is, it has never ever failed me, so i keep it in my "go bag" with all the expensive tools i use in the field, it deserves it.
BTW, disable IPV6 on the PC, there is still no use for it.
