Connecting my 7i96s to the VFD was created by Gautham
Hi Everyone,

I have never setup a CNC machine before, so while I found many other people's posts on similar topics helpful, I'm still not confident enough to try it myself without asking someone if I have it correct. I have a 7i96s board, and I can see that the TB2 PINs 22,23,24 are as follows.

22 - SPINDLE-
23 - SPINDLE OUT
24 - SPINDLE+

And the below image is my VFD's pinout

From this I gather the following

22 - SPINDLE- to COM
23 - SPINDLE OUT to AI1
24 - SPINDLE+ to +10v

Is this correct? I also wanted to know how to control the direction. Thank you for being so helpful.

For direction, assuming S1 is FWD and S2 is REV:

S1 --> OUT4A
OUT4B --> COM

S2 --> OUT5A
OUT5B --> COM

Thank you so much PCW and tommy
PCW would that mean I don't connect 22 - SPINDLE- to COM, instead connect OUT4B --> COM and OUT5B --> COM?

They all connect to the VFD COM pin
(Spindle-,Out4b,Out5B --> VFD COM)

Hi,

So I got my spindle and VFD wired up as you mentioned but as I am new to LinuxCNC I don't know how to set up my LinuxCNC to run my spindle. I am using 7i96s_5abobd.bin firmware if that has any impact on this. Thank you for being so helpful.

You should be able to use pncconf to setup your spindle
The firmware does not affect the spindle setup as the analog
spindle setup would be the same regardless of firmware.

A possible exception would be if you used the breakout board
to generate the analog spindle control voltage, but this would
really only make sense if you needed two analog outputs.

Ok thanks for the tip. I tried to setup the spindle via pncconf but it didn't run. I have a screenshot below of what I tried. In the TB1/TB2 tab I selected spindle PWM as you can see. Is this the wrong place to setup the spindle?

What do you have selected to enable the spindle?

Typically you need one output for single direction spindles
and two for reversible spindles.

On a 7I96S, in hal, these would normally connect to the isolated
outputs on TB3, which in turn need to be wired to appropriate
VFD control pins.
